The Innovation Launchpad Network+ held its second Induction Event for the first and second tranche of Researchers in Residence in February and added to the already burgeoning the RiR community.
Successful applicants were invited to the Mowbray in Sheffield to meet fellow academics, the Innovation Launchpad management team and Catapult representatives in person. The researchers were challenged to create a PechaKucha-style presentation which summarised their research proposal, offering a unique insight into these projects.
Each researcher was given 3 minutes to present their project in a visually engaging presentation using only images which appeared on screen for 15 seconds at a time. This allowed a break from the traditional academic presentations and for a more engaging morning session.
The afternoon saw a ‘community values’ session where the attendees were asked to suggest what they thought would be important values to follow in the establishment of a community among researchers, building on the initial values session the first RiR cohort attended.
After a productive session and importantly, a break for lunch, we reconvened to discuss some of the management team’s expectations for the researchers. ILN+ Manager Dr Kristina Parry kicked off with project management and did a fantastic job in quelling any fears about reporting – tools and templates are attached. The risks around relationships and expectations, access to and use of equipment, data availability and quality and handling of negative (but valid) results were highlighted in a group session on risk assessment. ILN+ Director Dr Pete Osborne later covered intellectual property and some considerations for researchers to take away with them.
You can listen to the podcast on Intellectual Property with Pete below.
The afternoon also saw a ‘community values’ session where the attendees were asked to suggest what they thought would be important values to follow in the establishment of a community among researchers, building on the initial values session the first RiR cohort attended.
For the evening, the Mowbray provided us a wonderful Italian feast as the community got to know each other even further. Day 2 of the Induction Event saw University of Sheffield’s Impact Officer Nicola Coxon run a session on ‘Research Impact’ and an interactive EDI session delivered by University of Nottingham’s Peter Craigon.
