Researcher in Residence: Charting a course for a sustainable sea

Hydrogen boat on a sustainable sea

In a bid to chart a course towards sustainability in the maritime sector, this project between University of St Andrews’ Martin Smith and the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (HVMC) sets out to disseminate the findings from the crucial HySeas programme with the ambition of creating a sustainable sea and beyond.

With the aim of facilitating the transition towards sustainable practices and fuels, the project seeks to compile a comprehensive portfolio of guidance tailored for both industry stakeholders and governmental bodies. Spearheaded by Martin his contributions extend beyond the seas, with seminal work in macroeconomics shaping policy decisions in the realm of electric drive train road transport. Widely regarded as instrumental in influencing the UK Government’s stance on phasing out fossil-only road vehicles, his expertise spans industries and spans a wide spectrum of sustainable initiatives.

Central to the project is the orchestration of a series of workshops across the UK marine sector. These sessions serve as a platform for sharing insights gleaned from the HySeas programme, fostering discussions around pertinent questions, challenges, and opportunities. The resulting wealth of information will inform the development of actionable strategies and support mechanisms aimed at bolstering the UK’s high-value manufacturing and service sector.

Measuring progress will be tangible, with benchmarks including the number of workshops conducted, engagement levels within the sector, and the establishment of a cohesive UK-wide interest group. Culminating in a written output summarising the collective insights of the sector, this initiative holds immense potential to fast-track the UK’s green maritime objectives.

As the HySeas programme sets sail, it heralds a new era of a sustainable sea and innovation in the maritime domain, guided by the expertise and vision of a pioneering academic and fuelled by collective industry collaboration.
